Certification is for Those Who Would Like to:
There are 2 Different Levels of Certification: Level 1 and Master
Level 1 Certification is attained by taking two of the four virtual workshops described below. One must be the Foundations of Appreciative Engagement, and the other can be the Appreciative Coaching workshop or Appreciative Leadership & Team Building. Master Certification is attained by taking all four virtual workshops.
What is Appreciative Engagement? It’s connecting people to each other and their work through the princples of Appreciative Inquiry, in a way that generates enthusiasm, alignment, and ownership for personal and organizational success. It results in fully engaged employees who are excited about their work, support change, and perform at high levels. In relation to Appreciative Inquiry, it’s like the “Final D” in the 4-D cycle. It’s what an individual person does Monday morning back on the job when the Appreciative Inquiry Summit is over and it’s time to make it all happen.
Appreciative Engagement is a Niche within Appreciative Inquiry.
Appreciative Inquiry tends to focus on large scale approaches to change using the 4-D cycle, which is typically worked from the leadership team on down. Appreciative Engagement focuses on smaller scale change at the level of the individual and team and tends to be more of “grass-roots” or “bottom-up” approach. While both result in system-wide culture change, Appreciative Engagement uses new models and tools that are different from the AI 4-D cycle. If you have taken Appreciative Inquiry workshops in the past, you will find very little overlap with what is presented in this program.
There are 4 Appreciative Engagement Virtual Workshops: (8 Weeks Each)
1. The Foundations of Appreciative Engagement: How to develop and work from an appreciative paradigm using the principles of Appreciative Inquiry. (Begins the week of October 10, 2011) SIGN UP NOW!
2. Appreciative Conversations: A structured approach for workplace conversations that builds trust, encourages cooperation, inspires change, and accelerates results. Four types of conversations will be covered: Informal, coaching, negotiation, and directive. Difficult and challenging conversations will be included for all four types, using the appreciative principles. (Spring 2012)
3. Appreciative Leadership & Team Building: An exploration into current appreciative leadership & team building theories, and co-creation of innovative tools & approaches. (Fall 2012)
4. The Foundations of Appreciative Inquiry: The basic theories and practices of Appreciative Inquiry including the 5-D cycle, with a brief overview of the Summit process and smaller-scale interventions. (Spring 2013). Note: You can substitute with an approved AI Foundations Course taken elsewhere.
The workshops are designed to work from all three levels of interaction. The first Foundations of Appreciative Engagement course looks at the individual appreciative paradigm, and what it means to work and think from that perspective. Appreciative Conversations then introduces a second person and the idea of influence, and how to negotiate and work within one-to-one relationships appreciatively. The Leadership & Team Building class takes the paradigm to the level of the group, and explains how to lead and influence a group of people in an appreciative manner. The Foundations of Appreciative Inquiry class completes the experience by working appreciatively at the system or organization-wide level.
Virtual Program Design.
The entire program will be done virtually using best practices for distance learning. Weekly classes will be supplemented with online videos and audio tutorials, so live class time will be focused on answering questions, and building off the material to co-create new ideas and models. All classes will be recorded.
Intimate, small classes with Jackie.
Class sizes will be limited to optimize learning and allow for plenty of personal interaction with Jackie. If you miss a class you can listen to the recording later, and in some cases, attend another class that week.

Emphasis on skill building
The workshops will be interactive and highly experiential, with emphasis on building skills as a practitioner. While relevant theory and information will be presented, the focus will be on directly applying the learning to build competence and confidence in using the tools successfully.
Contribute to New Book
A book will be written on Appreciative Engagement, including stories and examples from certification participants. Jackie Kelm will be the primary author, and registered certification participants will have an opportunity to submit as many stories, examples, or case studies to be considered for the book as they wish.
Transform Your Life at the Same Time
While the classes teach you how to develop the appreciative paradigm for work applications, you must adopt it on a personal level as well. You will be working on a personal and professional level throughout the program, which will transform your life as much as your work.
Input on days & times for workshops
Anyone in either level certification program will be given the opportunity to input on the day and time for the next workshop several months before it begins.
Unique Opportunity!
There are several things that will be unique to this certification program from others going forward. The most significant is that Jackie Kelm will be teaching the classes, and class sizes are small. It is possible other certified people will teach the classes in addition to Jackie in the future, and class sizes may be larger. It is also possible the prices may change.
The second opportunity unique to this certification class is submission for the new book, which will be put together over the next year or two.
Workshop Prices:
There is a discount for early registrations, and prices may go up in the future. Those who register for either Certification now will be guaranteed to pay the following going forward, even if prices go up. If prices drop, you will get the new lower price. The guaranteed prices are as follows:
60 days or more before the start of a workshop: $995 USD
30-59 days days before the start of a workshop : $1095 USD
29 days or less before the start: $1295 USD
Master Certification Group Calls 3 Times a Year
Special calls for people registered for Master Certification will be held a minimum of 3 times a year with Jackie. Participants will decide the format and content of the calls, which will provide further opportunities for networking, collaboration, and learning. All calls will be recorded and available on a special certification member-only webpage.
Business Networking at it’s best.
One of the first activities presented in the first Foundations of Appreciative Engagement class, is dissecting the culturally pervasive story of competition. Learning to reframe competition can maximize personal and professional success and help develop true, open collaboration. This will further support the creation of close, enduring business relationships in order to maximize learning and generate future business opportunities.
Master Certification Member-Only Webpage
A Member-Only Webpage will be created for people registered for Master Certification to learn about each other, listen to past calls, and will include other information or resources the group feels is valuable.
Potential Opportunities to Work with Jackie:
Appreciative Engagement is growing fast, and Jackie will be looking to certified people to help her carry the work forward. Opportunities will likely exist for teaching as well as co-creating new classes and books.
Listing in Appreciative Engagement Book.
Each person completing Master Certification will have their name and contact information listed in the book. Hopefully each person will have at least one story or example included as well.
Requirements for Completion of Level 1 Certification:
In order to receive Level 1 certification, you must do the following:
• Attend the Foundations of AE workshop, and either the Appreciative Conversations workshop or Appreciative Leadership & Team Building.
• Do the daily 5-minute exercises and between-class assignments in good faith.
• Complete workshop evaluations at the end of each class, including what you learned and intend to apply going forward
• Register for Level 1 Certification, which is separate from registering for workshops. (see below)
Requirements for Completion of Master Certification:
In order to receive Master Certification, you must do the following:
• Attend all 4 workshops.(can substitute other approved Appreciative Inquiry workshop)
• Do the daily 5 minute exercises and between-class assignments in good faith.
• Submit at least one story or example for possible inclusion in the book
• Complete workshop evaluations at the end of each class, including what you learned and intend to apply going forward
• Register for Master Certification, which is separate from registering for workshops. (see below)
Master Certification Also Includes:
• 3 Calls a year with other registered people
• Guaranteed lowest workshop prices
• Master Member-only webpage with member info, past call recordings, and other info to be determined by group
• Submission of as many stories or examples for the Appreciative Engagement book as desired
• Listing as certified in Appreciative Engagement in published book with contact information (with completion of certification requirements)
• Possible consideration for future business opportunities with Jackie
Certification Costs:
The cost to register for Level 1 Certification is $195. If you register at the $995 workshop price for the 2 required workshops, your total cost for certification will be $2185.
The cost to register for Master Certification is $395. If you sign up for 4 workshops at $995, your total cost for certification will be $4375 USD.
