WHEN:
The only place you can learn all this (and more) is at The Foundations of Appreciative Engagement Virtual Workshop, which will begin the week of October 10, 2011 and end the week of December 5, 2011. (One week off for Thanksgiving holiday). Two classes will be held each week, one on Tuesday evenings from 8:00pm – 9:15pm eastern time, and a second on Thursday afternoons from 1:00pm-2:15pm eastern time.
I’m Jackie Kelm, and I have been researching, speaking, and writing about the principles of Appreciative Inquiry for more than ten years. I first studied Appreciative Inquiry with David Cooperrider at Case Western Reserve University in 1995, and used AI for several projects as a manager in the Leadership & Organization Change group of a large consulting firm. During that time I also worked on a number of initiatives including a firm-wide leadership development program, change management center, and culture change program for mergers and acquisitions.
I devoted the past 10 years to using Appreciative Inquiry at the individual level, founded Appreciative Living, LLC, and wrote two books: Appreciative Living, and The Joy of Appreciative Living. I’ve since consulted, coached, and developed programs for several organizations to help them apply Appreciative Inquiry in new and unique ways, and now I want to share it all with you!
This is Much More Than a Teleseminar…
It’s a True Virtual Workshop
You will receive:
We will be using the latest best practices for distance learning, which includes teaching new concepts outside the live class on an individual, self-paced basis. To accomplish this, instructional audio and video clips have been created along with workbook files. These will be sent to you each week, and you simply simply watch and listen to them on your own time and follow along with the workbook as a guide.
Live weekly class time is devoted to group exercises, discussing material, and answering questions. You will be using your own work issues for group exercises to reinforce the learning from the videos, and simple practices will be given each week to further integrate the learning. We are keeping the class sizes small to 15 people or less, (right now it’s looking to be 10 people or less) so you get plenty of personal attention from Jackie and all your questions answered.
We will be using a special conferencing technology that allows us to do break-out sessions during the call, along with polling and “hand raising.” It truly makes it the closest experience you can get to a live workshop. Here’s what one participant had to say from the a previous class:
“I have always been a fan of in-person, classroom-type courses, so getting me all fired up via a telephone is quite amazing. You have been meticulously organized, and your materials have been first rate! I have found your workshop to be very powerful and personally transformational. I think a major reason for your work’s success has been the terrific tools and exercises you’ve developed. In addition, I think you’re a superb teacher.”
- Lucille Jaesson, Chevy Chase, MD

Contribute to a New Book!
A book is in the works on Appreciative Engagement, and we are looking for stories and examples to include. By participating in the workshop you will have an opportunity to submit stories and examples for possible inclusion.
Emphasis on Skill Building
The workshops will be interactive and highly experiential, with emphasis on building skills as a practitioner. While relevant theory and information will be presented, the focus will be on directly applying the learning to build competence and confidence in using this approach successfully.
Get help with Your Existing Issues
The exercises and discussions will have you working on your own situations rather than hypothetical cases, so your learning is practical, direct, and relevant. Plus you’ll get feedback and input from Jackie as well.
Supportive Environment
One of the first exercises in the workshop is dissecting the culturally pervasive story of competition. Learning to reframe competition can maximize personal and professional success and help develop true, open collaboration. In addition to the supportive “space” created by Jackie, this framing helps support the building of close, enduring business relationships that maximize learning.
All Calls are Recorded
If you cannot make one of the calls, there is no need to worry. Every call is recorded and available for playback at any time during the teleseminar. In addition, you may be able to attend the other class if there is space available.
This Workshop Counts Towards Certification!
If you are interested in getting certified in Appreciative Engagement, this workshop is the first one required. Click here to learn more about the Appreciative Engagement Certification Program.
Continuing Education Credits
We are currently applying for continuing education credits for this workshop. If you have a specific need or interest in this area, please emails us at admin@AppreciativeLiving.com
Time Considerations:
We realize people are busy, so every effort is being made to maximize the use of time and offer the greatest flexibility possible. The live teleclasses will run for 1 hour and 15 minutes each week, and between-class instructional videos and exercises will generally take between 1-2 hours. Optional between-class reading and resources will be provided for those who have the time and interest to go deeper.
There will also be a five-minute daily exercise given each week that will help you “build your appreciative muscle.” This daily practice is key to developing a natural appreciative mindset that will make you more effective in using this work, while also creating greater happiness and joy in your personal life.
While you may spend 3 hours or so a week in the teleseminar, our hope is you actually save more time than you spend. By using real-life issues for the exercises and discussions, you’ll have an opportunity to handle current work situations more effectively and successfully.
Transform Your Life at the Same Time
While the classes teach you how to develop the appreciative paradigm for work applications, you will simultaneously learn to see the good in your life. You will be working on a personal and professional level throughout the program, which can transform your life as much as your work.
Here’s what you’ll need to participate:
• Phone (landline, VoIP, cell) or Skype to call-in to the weekly live calls. The number is US long-distance.
• Computer with internet access and email (for use between calls).
• 1 copy of the book Appreciative Living: The Principles of Appreciative Inquiry in Daily Life
• Phone Headset: Recommended but not mandatory.
Regarding price, if you’ve looked at other Appreciative Inquiry workshops, you know they can cost from $1500 – $2200 plus travel and expenses for 3-5 days. With our virtual workshop you get the same contact hours, plus the ability to go back and watch the videos and tutorials after the workshop is over. Research also shows learning is enhanced by practicing a new skill over time and receiving feedback, which is what you will be doing over the 8 weeks. Plus you’ll be working real-issues, real-time.
The cost for this workshop is only $1195 USD
